Labeling of rolling stock

Indlæg af hdk »

Hello to all of you,

before I raise my question, I want to tell a few words about the things I do.
Grown up near Flensburg, I live in the south of Germany for more than 20 years.
Even now, the fascination about the railways in Denmark is present.
Having thought about a model-railway-theme, located in Denmark, I located it a bit south of it ;)

http://stummiforum.de/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=50462

Anyway, currently I want to have some DSB cars as well on the scenery, specificly Litra Gs (I) and Litra IAK.
My scenery is located in the early Epoche IV, ore more specific, at 1971.

Now my questions:
What is the Font-Type I can use for labelling DSB-Cars at that Point of time?
Was the "DSB" labelling in large letters used at that Point of time, or was it still the small sign with crown and winged wheel?

I would be glad, getting an answer to this question.

Kind regards

Hi Hans,

Welcome to the forum! :-)

Class IAK (the meat car) was renamed in 1965 to class Hks-u. So it would not have existed as IAK in 1971. You can find all the details on all class IAK cars in the Danish Railroad Library: http://www.jernbanen.dk/dsb_gvogn.php?A ... &litra=IAK

This could be designated as a transition period between the old and the new typeface. The new paint-scheme started around the beginning 70'es, I think 1972, so in 1971, most of the locomotives and cars would have had the old design. I do not know the name of the old typeface. With regards to the new typeface, the Helvetica typeface comes pretty close. I am not sure if it is Helvetica, but is is some kind of Helvetica-family typeface.

The guys at http://www.kmtext.dk/ might be able to help you with whatever lettering you need for your Danish layout. :-)

Med venlig hilsen
Søren

From 1932 and until 1972 DSB had its own type, it is not obtainable as a font, but according to "my library" Erik Olsen perhaps has some pictures of the font. In the beginning of the 1960's they started using another font very close to DIN1451Mittelschrift on rolling stock.

Between 1972 and the beginning of the 1990's, the Helvetica (or "Swiss") comes pretty close.

1990's and onwards is the font used is called DSB Bold.

Hi Klaus,

thanks a lot for your fast answer!
And thanks for your welcome.

Of course, the naming of the cars was wrong, when we speak about 1971. I guess, from 1966 onwards, the UIC conventions were used for the classification of the cars.

Your comments were pretty helpful for me. I will use this, to Label my models in that way.

By the way: Do you know, if the Litra IKA, which was announced by Hobbytrade will be produced in any way?

Kind regards

If you mean the text font used by DSB from 1893 or earlier, I have dwg files for use in AutoCAD and similar CAD programs.

Hi Eric,

wouldn't you mind, to share this with me?
Not being so sophisticated in using CAD Software, I only use Corel-Draw.
I'm not so sure, which formates Corel-Draw is able to read. DWG should be sufficient.

In the meantime I worked out the first labelings for German cars in Epoche IVa.
As mentioned before, These Are CDR Files. If you are interested I can share them as well.
Also I created a mask with different layouts for etching brass plates. They contain UIC-Steps, signal-holders, UIC-Anchors.
This is attached.

Kind regards

To my knowledge CorelDraw should be able to open single dwg files. I do not know, however, whether it is possible to work with my files in CorelDraw the same way as in AutoCAD.

The single files are inserted as blocks in a drawing, the scale equals the letter or number heigth. There are markings used for spacing the characters but before printing one layer must be turned off. I have made an explanation but only in Danish.

If you could give me your e-mail address I could send the package to you (it's a zip file), and if you can open the files I can translate the explanation into English.

Hi Folks,

in the meantime, Tommy Nilsson from www.jernbanen.dk sent me a drawing, showing the exact layout of the DSB labeling on freight-cars from 1965 onwards.
Find attached the drawing I created from this. If needed, I can also send the cdr-Sourcefile for Corel-Draw.

Kind regards
